Below are some of the projects and initiatives that have happened within Bolsover, Shuttlewood, Stanfree, Carr Vale, Oxcroft and the surrounding area.

Grot to Green

INVOLVE’, the Community Empowerment Network for Bolsover district, will play host to Radio Sheffield on the 14th August and co-ordinate visits to communities involved in the 'Grot to Green' initiative.

The visits follow a very successful community celebration event held in March that looked at many aspects of community life such as health and transport issues, and through photographic evidence local environmental concerns were also highlighted. That day also profiled ‘green’ initiatives that have benefited local communities and informed future activity with the Grot to Green scheme.

The scheme originated in 2005 when the Bolsover Local Strategic Partnership Housing and Environment Action Group commissioned a pilot project, led by INVOLVE, using renewal funding to turn local grot spots into green spots working closely with community groups to identify problem areas. The scheme was so successful that it will now be developed by INVOLVE in partnership with Bolsover District Council and local communities to deliver further environmental improvements through 2006/7.

Local profile for the project has been raised through an on-going partnership campaign. Information has been delivered into the community via the District’s Community Associations supported by INVOLVE, adverts and press releases have highlighted progress locally, posters and flyers have been distributed and both the LSP and CEN websites and newsletters have included Grot to Green information.

Bolsover Wellness

The Local Strategic Partnership's successful scheme, Bolsover Wellness, is now reaching its third year in operation. To date, there have been over 13,000 attendances. Those attending take part in the many broad ranging activities offered. These include circuit training, Tai Chi, Waistwatchers, chair-based exercise, ‘Change for Life’ and swimming sessions. The programme is run from Creswell and Kissingate Leisure Centres, Tibshelf Cardiac Club and Hilstown Miners Welfare. A cardiac support group is also run from Creswell Leisure Centre on Friday afternoons.

The Carers Sitting Service

The Carers Sitting Service in Bolsover District makes a real difference to people's lives by providing regular two hour respite breaks for carers. For many, two hours is just enough relief to keep going for the rest of the week without which they would simply give up.

The project aims to improve health and wellbeing by addressing targets for life expectancy, mental health and condition management in older age. The service impacts directly on the day to day support available to older people and their carers. This enables them to be independent and contribute to their quality of life.

The project, part funded by Neighbourhood Renewal Fund allocations provided by the Bolsover LSP, addresses health and education floor targets, and through the creation of two new posts, contributes to the local economy.

Castle Estate Crime Reduction Pilot Project

This project aimed to address the fear of crime which was evident on the Castle Estate. Neighbourhood Renewal Funding has enabled the street lighting to be upgraded, installation of alarms and the improvement of household security, the opening of a Community House and environmental work.

Several agencies (approx. 21) operate from the Community House, such as SPODA, Derbyshire Career Services, Community Health Care Service, NTL Training.

Boosting To Success

This initiative aims to significantly increase attainment in English, Mathematics and Science at the end of Key Stage 3 and a range of GCSE and equivalent courses at the end of Key Stage 4 through supporting out of hours extra school classes and running targeted booster sessions. All the activities for Key Stage 3 and 4 were organised by the three secondary schools - Bolsover, Clowne and Shirebrook.

Older Persons Medication

This initiative aims to ensure all patients aged 75 years and over in the District of Bolsover have a practical issues and concordance review as part of a medication review in line with the NSF standard and Primary Care Trust protocol.

Bright futures

A comprehensive attempt to deal with the sites of dereliction throughout the three communities of Shirebrook, Creswell and Bolsover. The project is a response to a community agenda as evidenced by local community plans. The sites are currently subject to fly tipping and also provide areas where young people congregate. Clearing the land and creating alternatives will reduce anti-social behaviour and fear of crime.

Into Gear

The Into Gear initiative is a two year pilot programme which enables adults with learning difficulties to develop their capacity to become economically active citizens in the community and create community enterprises thereby improving the employment rate in Bolsover District.

The programme is divided into 4 "gears" of progression and is designed to enhance confidence, self esteem, skills, knowledge and experience and address barriers to employment.

Local People Local Skills

An innovative community based education and training/skill sharing project which addresses the need for local creative activities leaders and support workers to undertake activity sessions within school and community settings. Participants will obtain skills and qualifications to enable them to lead and support the development of new and existing learning initiatives that are locally based.

Council for Voluntary Services Bolsover and District

The project provides training in identified neighbourhoods to develop the skills of the local voluntary and community groups through a certificated short programme and OCN accredited course programme. An increase in attending training events will enable more people to take responsibility for their own learning and development and help to build confidence.

Environment Improvement Scheme

The project aims to clean up the physical environment of key residential and business areas within the former coalfield and textile manufacturing area, using inter alia Letters of Request and Notices served under Section 215 Town and Country Planning Act 1990, where the condition of land, buildings and structures adversely affect the amenity of an area.

Bolsover Energised Youth Programme

The project aims to engage, enthuse and empower young people aged 11 - 25 years old and will tackle a number of youth issues such as youth disaffection, violence and anti-social behaviour, substance misuse and addiction, healthy lifestyles through exercise, general well-being and quality of life and pupil inclusion.

It is hoped to provide an indoor skate park which will be developed in partnership with the Sports Action Group and will also run CRE8 programmes, in partnership with Junction Arts, to complement the skate activity.

The project will develop targeted young people programmes at Pleasley Vale Outdoor Pursuits Centre by working with key agencies such as Creswell Pupil Referral Unit, Derbyshire Youth Service, North Derbyshire DAAT, Derbyshire Careers Services, Sport 2000 etc.

Warm and Secure Homes

The project aims to tackle some of the causes of social deprivation faced by residents of social housing in some of the most deprived wards within the District of Bolsover, by installing insulations and security devices at selected properties.

Change for Life

Change for Life is designed for women who are particularly vulnerable to health problems caused by obesity, overweight and lack of exercise. It offers a twenty week programme, sessions of 2 hours per week, which combines physical activity with advice on healthy eating, stress management and other lifestyle issues. The sessions are delivered in community settings to improve access to leisure facilities. The programme has proved very successful and many groups become self funding to continue beyond the initial 20 weeks.

Bolsover Renewal Project

The Bolsover Renewal Projects aims to tackle basic skills, work experience, self confidence and transport barriers to employment. It will enable 39 long-term unemployed disadvantaged residents from the target wards to secure permanent employment.

Classroom Assistants Training

The project will enable 25 local adults to achieve level 2 NVQ in Early Years Education and at least 15 to achieve Level 3. It also aims to enhance the ICT skills of all participants. The courses are run by Age Concern on behalf of the Coalfields Education Action Zone.

The outcomes from the training will include improved attainment in the schools involved as participants will offer a significant degree of classroom supply and increase the potential for employment.

Living Literacy

The Living Literacy programme is commissioned by Bolsover Local Strategic Partnership and funded through Government Neighbourhood Renewal Funds.

Living Literacy is about providing a 'wow' factor to boost literacy teaching, on the principal that children will feel more inspired to speak and write about things they’ve experienced (and enjoyed!) first hand.

The project aims to raise achievement in literacy for children as they leave primary school ready for entry into secondary school, as well as injecting enjoyment into the experience of learning in general.

Primary schools across the Bolsover district have the opportunity to experience modules offered by four partner-providers. Junction Arts' module involves working with highly experienced visual artists or drama practitioners on fun and exciting one-day projects, linked to school-based work and rooted in the National Literacy Curriculum.

The programme is organised as a joint partnership with local schools, Creswell Heritage Trust, Willow Tree Family Farm (Shirebrook), Bolsover Community Economic Development Team, Bolsover District Council Sports Team and Derbyshire County Council LEA.

Living Literacy is also now offered to students at Key stage 3, to help boost literacy and self confidence in the first year of secondary school.
